Turkeys are naturally inquisitive and spend much of their time exploring and foraging for food. Plenty of room to roam, fresh grass to graze, fresh air and sunlight are crucial to ensure the welfare of this amazing creature. When you purchase an organic turkey, this is a guarantee of the highest welfare standards, combined with a promise that the birds have only been fed 100% organic feed. The use of antibiotics and growth hormones are also strictly prohibited. 

Is an Organic Turkey Value for My Money?


Yes, our turkeys may seem 'pricey' compared to supermarket alternatives. But it's important to understand how intensive systems are able to drive prices down. Turkeys reared in this way have severe restrictions placed on their natural behaviour and are kept in conditions that damage their health. 

Compassion In World Farming report that conventional turkeys have been selectively bred to grow faster, reach heavier weights, and have very large breast muscles. This has led to various health problems including painful leg disorders and body system failures, e.g.heart failure. Overstocking barns means birds have difficulty moving around to reach food and water, and may be unable to avoid aggressive individuals. Their environment also deteriorates faster; litter becomes wet from the birds’ waste and releases ammonia into the air. These conditions often cause birds to suffer from painful skin and foot sores and eye and respiratory problems.

The secret to our turkey’s amazing taste? We only rear the traditional Free-Range Bronze Turkey, an old-fashioned breed that provides a bird with fantastic flavour and an even coverage of meat. Our organic turkeys have been reared slowly for 6 months, then dry hung for an additional few weeks to allow the muscle fibre to break down, creating a more tender bird that still has structure. The breed also plays a key role, the traditional bronze is a far superior breed to the 'whites' bred on intensive turkey farms, valued not for taste but their ability to grow at speed for maximum profit.
